Effect on Economy
Adults who suffer from ADHD are likely to have a big negative impact on the economy of society at large. Adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder do 22 fewer days of work per year than people who do not have the condition. There is some recent research, which looked at 7,000 workers in 10 countries, and found an average of 3.5% had ADHD. People who have ADHD find it difficult to concentrate at work and therefore are more likely to experience work related problems and need time off from their work environment. It may also be the case that people suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have more time off work due to a stressful home life and different problems that arise from relationships. It is because they may be hyperactive, easily distracted, forgetful and impulsive that these problems may arise.
ADHD has been found to be more prevalent in men and workers in developed rather than developing countries, and this is a very interesting fact. Modern researchers have to understand what it is about modern developed society that leads to an increase in the number of people who suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. These workers with ADHD were found to take an average of eight days off sick each year. They also had a significant number of days where their work was of poorer quality compared to people not suffering from ADHD.
As developed nations gravitate away from agricultural and manual pursuits and towards activities that depend upon cerebral activity the number of adults suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may be seen to increase. How developed nations tackle this problem for the benefit of the people suffering ADHD and for society at large will surely be a difficult endevour, and will indeed be a test of modern society.
