There is no definitive medical cure for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but treatment can reduce many symptoms and make the condition much less of a problem for people. ADHD can be treated by using medications, or by therapy, but it is agreed by many that a combination of both forms of treatment are the best course of action to take. Treatment of ADHD is in fact a very controversial subject, with many people having strong views one way or another as how to best tackle the problem.
Medications for ADHD produce a temporary improvement, but they are not a permanent cure. There are three types of medication for ADHD, methylphenidate, dexamfetamine, and atomoxetine. All three of these medications are licensed for use by children and adolescents, however adults who were diagnosed with ADHD as children are licensed to use atomoxetine. Where the problem lies is that there are no medications currently licensed for treating adults who have been newly diagnosed with the condition.
As well as taking medication, several different therapies can be used in treating ADHD, whether they occurs in children, adolescents or adults. Psychotherapy, first developed by Sigmund Freud is known as a ‘talking’ therapy, which means that the patient will be encouraged to discuss ADHD and how it affects them. It can help children and adolescents, but may be of particular benefit to adults in making sense of and coming to peace with being diagnosed with ADHD. There are many other ways of treating ADHD that many people with the condition find very helpful. These methods include the cutting out of certain foods and the taking of supplements. If someone has ADHD and is interested in cutting out certain foods, some nutritionists and experts believe that sugar and caffeine are often responsible for aggravating hyperactivity. An intolerance to wheat or dairy products may also add to the symptoms of anyone facing ADHD problems, and an awareness of this can be equally beneficial to adults as well as children.
