Brand Names: Adderall®, Adderall XR®

Generic Name: amphetamine (am-FET-uh-meen) with dextroamphetamine (dex-trow-am-FET-uh-meen)

Manufacturer: Shire Pharmaceuticals

Adderall® for Adults

Adderall® is a medication that must be prescribed by a doctor and is the brand name for a combination of amphetamine salts that function as central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, and have been FDA approved for the treatment of both childhood and adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as narcolepsy in adults.

Adderall® is now available in generic versions. Generic Adderall® is offered by Ranbaxy, Sandoz, and Teva Pharmaceutical.

What Is Adderall XR®?

Adderall® is now available in an extended release version that lasts for 24 hours, called Adderall XR® (an abbreviation for eXtended Release). Adderall XR® is an extended-release version of the drug that only needs to be taken once daily and is only indicated for childhood and adult ADHD, not narcolepsy. The XR formulation is still patented, meaning that it will not be available in generic form until at least 2019.

How Adderall® Works

Although it is not known exactly how Adderall® works, it is believed to increase the flow of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine, chemicals that carry the signal between neurons (cells of the nervous system). This can result in an increase in a person’s ability to focus over extended periods of time.

Adderall® and Adderall XR® Dose

Adderall® is an oral mediation available in capsule form. The individual dosages for both Adderall® and Adderall XR® range from 5 – 30 milligrams (mg).

Time for Adderall® to take Effect

Although the time required for Adderall® to take effect may be different for each individual, instant-release drugs in this class generally take 1 – 3 hours. The amount of instant release Adderall® in the bloodstream peaks at about 3 hours. Adderall XR® lasts 24 hours, with the dose peaking about 8 hours after it is taken.

Is Adderall® and Adderall XR® Effective for Adult ADHD?

Adderall® has been used to treat ADHD in both children and adults for many years. In 2004, the Harvard investigators involved in analysis of Adderall XR® Phase III trials in adults concluded that the drug significantly improved subjects’ ability to maintain focus, concentrate, and pay attention for longer periods of time [1].

What is the Effect of Adderall® for Adult ADHD on Sports Performance?

Stimulants used in Adderall® have been shown to improve sports performance, particularly maximum heart rates and time to exhaustion during exercise.

Adderall® and Adderall XR® Minor Side Effects
Adderall® and Aderall XR® are generally considered safe and effective for adults. Common side effects are similar to those typically associated with the use of stimulants, and include:
· Dry mouth
· Loss of appetite
· Difficulty falling asleep
· Weight loss

Adderall® and Adderall XR® Precautions
Addiction & Abuse
Studies have been done to address concern that use of stimulant medications may lead to later drug dependency and abuse. Although untreated adult ADHD has been linked to an increased risk of substance abuse later in life [2], the likelihood of future drug abuse disorder is actually decreased when adult ADHD is properly treated [3].

Still, because Adderall® and Aderall XR® are amphetamines and stimulants, there is the potential for abuse. So this medication is not recommended for people who have a history of drug abuse.

Cardiac Precautions
Adderall® and other amphetamines may not be right for you if you have a history of heart problems, such as hardened arteries (arteriosclerosis), heart disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), or any other pre-existing cardiac condition.

Other Precautions
The drug is also not recommended for people with overactive thyroid, glaucoma, epilepsy and seizure disorders, severe anxiety or agitation and those who have taken MAO inhibitors within the past two weeks. Before taking Adderall® or Aderall XR®, be sure to tell your doctor if you have any of these problems.

Pregnancy Category C
Like all other adult ADHD medications, Adderall® and Aderall XR® are considered “category C” medications, which means that although no human studies have been done, based on animal studies it is thought that they may be harmful to an unborn baby.

This drug can also pass into breast milk and may be harmful to your baby if you nurse. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while you are being treated for adult ADHD.

Total Treatment of Adult Attention Hyperactivity Disorder
Adderall®, Aderall XR®, or any medication used to treat Adult ADHD, should be used as a part of a total treatment program. Comprehensive treatment of the adult ADHD often includes education, support groups, regular doctor appointments and therapy or counseling.

Adderall Withdrawal
If you stop taking Adderall, you may well end up with withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms are worse the longer you have been taking Adderall and the higher the dose you were taking. The main withdrawal symptom is extreme fatigue. Other withdrawal symptoms include negative mood, ranging from lack of motivation to depression. Symptoms can last from a few days to a few months.

Adderall Shortages
There is currently a shortage of Adderall in the United States. Adderall has been added to the official FDA drug shortages list. Many people with adult ADHD have, unfortunately, shown up at their local pharmacy to find that the pharmacy is out of stock. The reason for the shortage is that the DEA sets quotas for how much of various drug ingredients can be manufactured each year. As a result, not enough has been produced to meet the growing demand for Adderall.

Anecdotally, we have heard that pharmacies in ethnic neighborhoods are more likely to have Adderall in stock, in case you are having trouble finding it near you.

  1. Is there anyone over 60 on Adderall? Does the medication help with self confidence, speaking in public etc. do you need it when you retire if staying focused is less of an issue.

  2. “Anecdotally, we have heard that pharmacies in ethnic neighborhoods are more likely to have Adderall in stock, in case you are having trouble finding it near you.”

Why did you feel it was necessary to include this? It has absolutely nothing to with Adderall and smacks of barely concealed racism.

Clearly if you can’t post a comment under 1000 words you are either on too high of a dosage or abusing medication prescribed to help people with ADHD achieve a calm state of mind allowing them to focus and prioritise in order to gain some normality in life.

  4. Adderall XR 20mg by Shire (I’ve taken since 2006)
    The finest medication …
    1. I’ve never been a morning person since birth. My mother confirmed this. 2. Coffee, if it has any effect at all on me, makes me tired instead of awake.
I kept my prescription on my nightstand and when the alarm #1 goes off, I swallow with water. Go back to sleep for another hour, until 2nd alarm.
The only side effect I experience at all, is slightly drier mouth, not unmanageable.
Now that NV Health Plan has screwed up my insurance and I haven’t been able to see the doctor to get my refill, I am scattered, frazzled, edgy temper (because I’m not as productive and feel out of control). I’m not having fatigue problems at all; (I believe that happens to those who take it for a “boost” instead of taking for focus/clarity).
I cannot take generic adderall (tablets) at all. I get every negative side effect listed, except nausea, incl. extreme headaches with TMJ. Until I get my insurance unscrewed, which may be a awhile, I’ve gotten a B-12 shot and more L- Amino acids, which do help, but have to be taken specifically w/o food having empty stomach for 2-3 hours to absorb effectively, which isn’t something that is easily managed into my daily routine.

    So, Bravo to Shire!

I have had problems learning all through school, it was a nightmare so I dropped out in 11th grade. I have all the . I have all the signs of ADHD(wish I didn’t)! My Doc tried me on adderall añd I was a a new person but I have ran into a roadblock my insurance won’t pay for it without preaproval and its $ 70.00 for 60 pills. Just can win for losing. Any suggestions?

  6. hello,
I have really bad side effects and it’s really hard for me being around people when I’m on Adderal.
I took it for 2 weeks and stoped and today I took it again after 3 weeks.
How long did it take you to adjust to Adderall?
(I tried a lot of medications but the side effects were unbearable)
I read on line that sometimes it takes months or even years to adjust.
Although I have an amazing doctor, your opinions and experiences will mean much more to me.
I’m from Israel and I don’t a lot of people who are dealing with that so I really need your help.
Soory about any spelling or grammar mistakes, it’s 05:12 am and I just can’t sleep.
Thank you very much and I wish you all a great year!

  7. After losing a leg in an accident I became severely depressed to the point of accepting suicide was the only way out. My psychiatrist is in a study at the VA using Adderall to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Psychiatrists will as of recent years prescribe a CNS stimulant in small doses to help with people with depression. It, along with other anti-depressant meds prescribed gives the depressed person a bit of energy as being depressed is a condition where feeling mentally down also makes the body systems slow down also.
I was in a PTSD state and my psychiatrist tried Adderall for me. I WILL CONCLUDE THAT I AM STILL ADJUSTING THE DOSAGE BUT IMMEDIATELY BECAME COMPLETELY NOT DEPRESSED AT ALL AND REGAINED HOPE AND ENJOYMENT IN MY LIFE. I consider it a savior. I am adjusting my daily input so that I can minimize the “downer” and severe constipation issues after the drug wears off. I want to take it every day but my current dose wears me out so that I don’t take it daily. I reduced the dose today and feel fine so far. 20 mgs once per day in the morning.

I am 29 years old and have had ADHD my whole life. As a kid I was very wild and rambunctious and have always had a very difficult time concentrating, paying attention, etc. I was put on Ritalin when I was young and then was put on Adderall as I got older. As a kid I never liked to take it because it would make me very tired and I really never seen any results that helped except it calmed me down due to the tiredness. Once I reached my teenage years is when I really noticed a difference. I outgrew the tiredness and it really helped me focus and it REALLY helped me in hockey. That’s when I flourished in hockey. I was always a bigger kid but I had a lot of natural strength because I am the exact copy of my father who was an athlete and a very physically solid being. So between the ages of 11-13 I grew much bigger and began to dominate my hockey leagues with my physicality. The Adderall helped me lock in and focus and I would practice on my stick handling and my shot. It helped me a lot throughout the hockey seasons during practices and games, and it allowed me to help see the game better and seamed like it slowed the game down for and I could see a play develop before it happened. I used to be able to skate end to end with the puck with ease due to my size my opponents would just get laid out when they tried to check me. It also helped me focus on practicing extra which helped me develop a 93 mph slap shot, a deadly accurate and fast wrist shot, and a good stick handler, especially for a player my size. But once 11th grade came around I gradually stopped taking my Adderall or would take it sparsely and my grades fell and was no longer playing hockey because I would’ve had to play far away and I didn’t make the high school team. I almost didn’t graduate and life was becoming harder and harder to deal with for me.

I didn’t start taking Adderall again until last year and went about 11 years without taking it and made it hard for me to hold a job. I went through a lot of different jobs and when I held one I couldn’t afford the insurance or it wasn’t offered. But I have had my same job for the last 5 years because I have a family now to support. Once I started back on Adderall last year it has been night and day on the benefits it does for me. I can now again focus and concentrate on my task or tasks at hand. It has help d control my over eating and helped me lose a lot of weight. To be totally honest this is probably the best medication in the world for my ADHD. During my years without it I was completely wild and out of control and did whatever I wanted and didn’t care of the consequences. Once I became a father and a husband I knew I had to make better choices. But again I didn’t and because of that I almost lost my family. That’s when I reached out for help from my doctor and got put back on Adderall and life has been so much better in every aspect.

  9. Im 31, I knew from the moment I read up on adhd about 5 years ago, that I struggled with adhd. I just didnt have access to medical help with that retrospect. Growing up we didnt have medical insurance. Being a first generation here, I didnt have the resource, knowledge, nor help with this. I struggled with college bc I had extreme difficulty with focus and study, but finally I did graduated. Just last year, bc of the severity of it impacting my life at that very moment and also having the time, medical insurance, and financial means that I didnt have previously I finally, finally was able to get the proper treatment. It was like night and day. My husband said it was as though someone flipped a light switch on me lol. My thoughts were more coherent, I can follow conversations from beginning to ending, it used to be so difficult (if not impossible) and everything else in the books of the challenges of struggling in life with ongoing untreated adhd. My psychiatrist started me off at 15mg adderall xr 2 times a day just last summer. At my work, I constantly have 5 different things coming at me all at once. I am expected to answer relevant critical thinking questions while resolving other tedious tasks on hand etc. My adderall xr prescription recently increased from 15mg to 20 mg. It helped tremendously but it will be minimized to 5 mg adderall ir for the afternoon instead bc Im having difficulty sleeping at night (to my surprise). I have been taking it every morning consistently, but its the afternoon schedule that Im still trying to figure out.

For those who are struggling with untreated adhd and dont have the resources; I really feel for you and empathize with you. It is miserable. Until you are able to get your medical insurance situated or whatever delimma that is hindering you from getting the appropriate treatment, I noticed that a combination of Cognizin Citicolin and omega 3 (or fish oil design to provide supplements for your brain chemicals) has helped me as well. Also, alpha-gpc is helpful as well when I’ve taken it with my multivitamins, omega 3, and creatine. It cant compare to adderall, but it is the next closest thing to it for me at the time. Citicoline and alpha gpc are supplements where a prescription is *not* needed for. I would *not* use Citicoline and aphaGpc together at the same time bc ut provides similar effects through different waya in the brain chemicals. I suggest doing more research on it too. I truly hope that was helpful and that help is accessible to you sooner than later.

  10. So, I am in my middle 30’s. I have adhd and have been on adderoll 20mg 3 times a day for 4 years. My doctor randomly decided to prescribe me adderoll 10 mg 1 a day. When I told him it was not enough because I have been on 60 mg for 4 years straight he decided to stop my medication the day if my refill apt.
I panicked and didn’t understand why. He said they are not prescribing adderoll to patients anymore. Then I found out that, that was not true. I feel that my doctor is making decisions that have effected my job and put me in withdraw. Very dangerous to suddenly stop this for no reason. Any suggestions?

After dying a couple of times from complications due to a bee swarm in 2009, my brain lost most of it’s right frontal lobe ability to retain short-term memory. I also lost scattered long-term function that varies. Dates, matching names w/faces, aphasia, dyscalcula, dysgraphia, all of which come and go. I felt low-grade dyslexic and autistic “type” symptoms, some that I could combat and handle to a degree, but others that began to overwhelm me. I taught Special Ed Severe Emotionally Disturbed for 20 years, so was well aware of my own behaviors and symptoms. This all hit at once after @ 8 months from the bee attack, when my brain began to heal, bringing on grand-mal seizures as well. I re-taught myself to sign my name after a year and long division after that, still having issues with “carrying” in long multiplication and adding 3-digit numbers, but much of my cognitive vocabulary was gone. With two M.D.s, BA in Lang Arts, Thtre-Arts, Advanced Comm, and Public Speaking, I now could barely speak with a stranger, much less talk on the phone. Words still black out in mid-sentence, yet I type as if nothing is amiss.
After several years of banging my head (doesn’t work), I spoke to my head Dr., my saviour since this all began, about my growing inability to stay on even the simplest tasks w/o heading off to start and not finish four or five more, each, which in turn, created the same spread of irrationality. Most of them went unfinished because I forgot my idea once returning to them. I asked if I might be allowed to try Adderall. She was very agreeable to this, given my wife’s desperate concurrence with my plight……..and cleaning up after me.
Being a rapid-metabolizer with high tolerances to most schedule-type medications, 30mg XR x one/day was first. I did not respond to this type of release. After 3-4+ months, the same mg dose, but rapid release twice daily, was given and my brain said “Okay” to this. I began to zero in on tasks and even ventured back onto the computer, to my wife’s horror. Computers and smart-fones were a big “no-no” so I broke out my gigantic Webster’s Un-Abridged to check spellings and things got better to point. About six months went by and my head seemed to limit-out. Having gone as far as it would allow me, my stress and tension came back. I even gave up teaching myself for some time until my wife noticed my lull. My next visit with my Dr., we both described my issues. The 30mg/2xdaily was increased to 40 and that was the magic number. Most things were now within my crosshairs, even if it required the occasional odd method to my madness. My life-long tick of nail-biting ceased. I was born before the 60’s ended, if that says anything. My scars, both physical from the seizures and mental from the whole event, are healed as well as they ever will. The Adderall helps me continue to teach and re-teach myself daily, w/o the horrid frustration and even helps me to find new and different learning styles I used to teach my students, but never had to use, myself. Only now can I truly understand why my students were frustrated and some just “lost”.

  12. Crystal Dawn says

In my own opinion, Adderall is HORRIBLE. My niece is on it for a traumatic brain injury. She is 30 yo, with a 10 yo daughter. My niece does not make good decisions for herself or her daughter, and my niece also has seizures. I know she snorts Adderall, instead of taking it properly. The woman is completely unhinged at this point. She needs to go into a psych ward ASAP. Adderall is NOT HELPING. *ANGRY*

  13. I have taken adderall 20mg IR twice daily for two years, since had a near fatal atv rollover and must take hydrocodone my PCP wishes me to go by mental health just to get a quick note that the doseage is appropriate for my medical chart to cover him writing a second schedule drug. Is this going to take a act of congress or will they comply without a ordeal? I turned 40 this year and my idle time that I can’t work due to injury was unbearable without the adderall. Thanks for feedback

  14. Ron Ashcraft says

My previous family doctor diagnosed me with ADD in 2002 and prescribed Adderall which worked great. Four years ago my family and I relocated to another city and two years later my doctor moved his practice and I had to change doctors. I’m currently on Adderall XR, 30 mg once a day. The doctor I have now insists that I take two days off from it every week and the time between prescriptions reflect that. The problem is, on the days that I take off, I go through full-blown withdrawal, with extreme depression and fatigue and I can’t get anything done on those days. I’m afraid if I mention this to my doctor on my next appointment (which is next Wednesday), he may take me off of it completely. I have a 12 year old boy and a wife who suffers from severe depression and bipolar disorder. I can’t afford to fall apart; I’m drawing teacher retirement, but I still have to work part-time. Anybody have any suggestions? I’ll mention that I’m 58 years old and aside from the ADD and mild diabetes, I’m in good health.

  15. Corinne Fuller says

Started taking Adderall less than a week ago and my life flipped around the first day. I’m 43 next month, and feel as though I’ve been robbed my whole life—but extremely grateful I found this now. I no longer feel guilty for being “the way I am” (was) because now I see that it was brain chemistry and not the real “me”. Definitely like a switch was flipped. I had reluctantly accepted for years now that I wasn’t like “normal” people who could make it through a whole day and not crash in the middle for 3-7 hours in the middle of it. When time allowed, I would sleep for 12 hours straight. Life exhausted me to the core. I called myself a space cadet, a scatterbrain, a flake, and a few other not-so-nice things. I’d even warn new friends. So much guilt. Now I sleep 7-8 hours at night, and am miraculously ok the whole day. I can do things one at a time instead of being distracted into doing PART of 6 things. I’d even tell myself, out loud, “Ok. Let’s trim the edge of the yard. DON’T start weeding or watering or deadheading flowers. You can do this.”
Nope. Even while starting to water, I would say,”You should be trimming the edges of the yard….”
This is just a gardening example.
Living with this frustration toward myself was exhausting.
I’ll stop here lest I write a novel. My point being:
Adderall is helping me to be a better friend, a business owner, and I think a better person all around. I’m not mad at myself any more. Amazing new life.

I showed the man all my Tests and Results and I told him have already diagnosed with Madness and have spent thousands of dollars on medication. I said I will like to try him cause someone introduced me to him. He asked me sorts of questions and I answered him correctly. To cut the story short, He gave me some medicinal soaps and some herbs(have forgot the name he called them) and he thought me how am going to use them all. At first I was skeptical but I just gave it a try. I was on his Medication for 2 weeks and I used all the soaps and herbs according to his prescription. That he will finish the rest himself. And I called him 3 days after, I arrived and I told him what is the next thing he said, he has been expecting my call. He told me to visit my doctor for another test. I am 60 years old and have taken Adderall, or the generic equivalent, for a few years now. Because of financial/employment disruptions, therefore lack of insurance, I have had to stop taking it, mostly cold turkey, periodically. Withdrawal effects, despite taking the highest dosage allowed (30mg twice daily) was negligible. It seems to me addiction to this drug, particularly at this dose, is primarily psychological and less than cigarettes, or coffee. However I can see how higher doses could cause problems with urination or sexual function. Other than that I have nothing but good things to say regarding it. The energy increase for myself is primarily mental, but getting out of bed and engaging in the day has GREATLY improved. A word of caution to remember to eat to avoid an upset stomach and nervousness.
